Marina Industries Association of Australia
|

|
| The Marina Industries Association of Australia (MIAA) develops and promotes many programs and incentives to help improve marinas nationally and reduce the impact of marinas on the environment. Following are details on three major MIAA programs. |
| |
Gold Anchor Rating Scheme |
| | The Marina Industries Association of Australia international marina rating scheme is designed to assist the boating community and the wider public that use and visit marinas.
The scheme helps consumers select marinas that are best suited to their needs in terms of facilities, services, standards and price. Gold Anchor is for marinas what the star rating scheme is for guest accommodation. Ratings range from 3 to 5 Gold Anchors. Most marinas are in the 3.5 to 4.5 Gold Anchor range which parallels accommodation star ratings. There are certain essential criteria for each rating (see table below) For example 5 Gold Anchor marinas must have at least 2 en-suite bathrooms. Gold Anchor rated marinas participate in a 102 point assessment conducted by an independent auditor experienced in customer service, boating and the role of marinas in the boating experience. Participating marinas are also subject to up to three ‘mystery shopper’ checks over the three year validity period to ensure the integrity of the scheme. Gold Anchor participation indicates to the public that these marinas are customer focused, open to independent assessment and happy to be benchmarked against other marinas. Consumers can identify a Gold Anchor marina by the distinctive Gold Anchor flag, the Gold Anchor symbols displayed on the marinas marketing and communications material and in various marina directories and guides. Essential Items for specific Gold Anchor Rating standards To achieve the specified Gold Anchor rating a marina must meet the following essential items as well as gain the required level of points (1).

| 1 A maximum of 482 points are allocated against 102 assessment items within 10 general areas of assessment (egs: marina design and construction and land facilities and services). A weighted average score is used across the nine areas providing a total percentage score. Each level of Gold Anchor rating sits within a percentage band: e.g. 4 Gold Anchor is within the band 80% to 85%. 2 Where there is a rise and fall of water levels of greater than 30cms 3 Subject to having boats over 18m 4 Bathrooms & laundry for 5 GA has infrastructure of excellent appearance, presentation & cleanliness

Clean Marinas Program |
| | The Clean Marinas Australia Program is a national voluntary accreditation system for marinas, yacht clubs, boat clubs, slipways and boatyards across Australia to promote clean seas and waterways for everyone to enjoy. While there is an entry level to Clan Marinas those that fly the Clean Marinas flag at the marina are subject to an independent audit covering 103 points across 10 areas including boat maintenance and storage, emergency planning and boater education. A recent Program development has seen the creation of a level 4 Clean Marina: these marinas adhere to the criteria of ISO 14001: world best practice for environmental management systems. Recreational boaters benefit from the Clean Marinas program. Accredited Clean Marinas have a policy of protecting the health of its patrons, staff and environment by minimising the discharge of pollutants into the water and air. Boaters are urged to also be good stewards of Australia’s marine and coastal environment by patronizing marinas that have voluntarily taken steps to safeguard this invaluable resource.
There are a number of Best Management Practices that “clean” boaters can adopt to protect water quality. For more information on this porgam Click Here

Low Carbon Marina Initiative |
| | The MIAA have partnered with the Carbon Reduction Institute to manage the Low Carbon Marina Initiative.
The Initiative provides a simple certification system to enhance the sustainability of marinas and related businesses. It allows for participation at varying levels of carbon reduction. Participating businesses go through a three step process. Firstly there is an assessment of the carbon footprint; followed by development of strategies to reduce carbon emissions and finally the offsetting of unavoidable carbon emissions by purchasing carbon credits.
By supporting Low Carbon marinas consumers can be assured they are dealing with businesses that are acting locally to deal with the global issue of climate change. More information on the Low Carbon Marina Initiative can be found at the Carbon Reduction Institute.
