New marina for the Tweed Coast

World class waterfront development proposed for the northern NSW

The Tweed Coast is set to receive a $30 million-plus world-class marina and recreational facility, following a recent announcement of the Twin City Marina Consortium to create the landmark Boyds Bay Marina.

The New South Wales (NSW) Department of Lands announced the Twin City Marina Consortium, a joint venture between Seymour Group and Watpac Property, as the preferred developer for the project.

The new marina will be located on the Tweed River, Tweed Heads in Northern NSW and will provide 185 marina berths, a 160 dry boat storage facility, and a waterfront marine lifestyle complex. A waterfront promenade, boat hire and coffee shop, upgraded new public jetty, upgraded parks, and other significant community amenities will also be provided as part of the Twin City Marina Consortium's plans.

"This is a major milestone project for Tweed Heads and firmly consolidates the Tweed Region's reputation as a boating paradise," Kevin Seymour, Chairman of both Seymour Group and Watpac Limited, said. "Our vision is to transform the site into a world-class marina and boating facility with comprehensive community amenities and facilities. We now look forward to realising this vision and setting new benchmarks in sustainability design, community benefit and environmental compatibility."

The Consortium aims to draw heavily on past experience and expertise in marina developments in sensitive and pristine areas, including the Urangan Boat Harbour redevelopment project in Hervey Bay, which was awarded to Seymour Group and Watpac in 2008 by the Queensland Government.

"The Tweed River, like Hervey Bay is well known throughout Australia for its natural beauty and as a picturesque boating location," Greg Kempton, Watpac Managing Director, said.

"We are very aware of our obligations and responsibilities to ensure this natural beauty is protected and enhanced through the creation of the Boyds Bay Marina. We're also conscious of the significance of this area to its traditional owners and will work in closely with indigenous representatives, as well as other key local stakeholders within the community," he said.

The construction of Boyds Bay Marina will create an estimated 203-plus full-time jobs during the development phase and 40-plus full-time jobs on an ongoing basis, according to the Consortium. Plans for Boyds Bay Marina, which are subject to final approvals, include:

  • 185 marina berths and associated support facilities
  • 160 dry boat storage and maintenance facility
  • Waterfront marine lifestyle complex
  • Waterfront promenade
  • Boat hire and coffee shop
  • Marine light industrial tenancies
  • A dedicated area to relocated the Volunteer Marine Coastguard
  • An upgraded public jetty
  • Extended pathway network to provide continual access around the Marina precinct, including pedestrian/cycle loop
