Anchorage: Grassy Harbour, TAS

A gourmands paradise where Bass Street meets Tasmania

Gourmet Produce...History & Shipwrecks...Wild Windswept Coastline

The rolling green pastures, regular rainfall and brisk, clean air inherent to this Bass Strait island enable a vibrant dairy industry to thrive. The King Island Dairy Company produces an enormous range of seriously good cheeses, yoghurts and other dairy products. The Fromagerie tasting room is open to visitors and is highly recommended. The grass fed beef produced here is highly sort after and exported to select retailers around the world.Seafood is abundant with local crayfish the sweetest, most succulent this visitor has ever tasted.

European explorers first sighted King Island in 1787, with sealing becoming quite an industry in the early 1800's.Matthew Flinders and George Bass charted the island on their courageous voyage south, to what would later become known as Bass Strait.

King Island boasts pristine white beaches, where the only footprints likely to be found on the sand are your own.It is possible to spend a whole day swimming and beachcombing for treasures washed ashore by the Bass Strait swells, knowing that you are likely to be the only visitor for days, possibly weeks.Though, it's position at 40 degrees South ensures that swims are more the quick dip kind, than the languid dawdling of warming climes. Offshore, the treacherous waters have claimed hundreds of ships, with the loss of thousands of lives.

A Maritime Trail onshore throughout the island, has been erected detailing tales of the shipwrecks, some heroic, others heart-breakingly sad.Hire a car and tour the island to explore this well signposted fascinating trail.

Anchorage
King Island is positioned midway between the northwest coast of Tasmania, and Cape Otway on the Victorian coast. It is often subjected to wild weather, with the strong winds and enormous seas that regularly roll through Bass Strait.Grassy Harbour, on the south east coast of King Island, with its imposing rock seawall is a welcome and protected safe haven. The harbour offers protection from all wind directions, although some swell may invade the harbour in southerly winds.

Approach is from the south, keeping well clear of Omagh Reef, which sits south west of the end of the seawall.Onshore leads (which are lit at night) guide vessels north of this reef. Once inside the harbour, fishing boats riding to their moorings will generally indicate the anchorage area.If space cannot be found in this area, it is suggested the Marine Board be called on VHF16 to request permission to anchor outside the designated area.Barges from the mainland regularly berth at Grassy Harbour and care must be taken not to obstruct these vessels.Depth in the anchorage area is approx 8mt over sand with some weed patches throughout.

Anchorage location: Lat 40 deg 04S   Long 144 deg 04E
