Carnarvon Yacht ClubWith banana and mango plantations lining the fertile banks of the Gascoyne River, Carnarvon's agricultural industry provides up to 60% of Perth's winter vegetables. Positioned at the northern end of Shark Bay, winter is the perfect time to enjoy superb sun blessed boating in this regional hub, midway up the West Australian coast.

The Carnarvon Yacht Club thrives because of its core group of members that embrace the club and community spirit.  The club members pooled their talents, and, with the welcome assistance and funding from the Department of Infrastructure (DPI), they set to work on their long awaited marina.  DPI contributed considerable complimentary design and engineering work. Club members undertook fund-raising to add to the Federal Government Grant, with countless sausage sizzles and other fund-raisers, sustaining rolling busy bees to move through construction phases.  The 34 berth marina was constructed in two stages, with stage two completed in 2006.  The marina is now well –utilised by club members with the limited number of berths in high demand. The Club welcomes cruisers and will endeavour to allocate a vacant pen to visitors when available. Entrance to the marina is via the Fascine Channel, which is the main waterway that runs through the centre of the town. Anchorage is possible in the Fascine right outside the club grounds.

CYC is a members' yacht club of the old fashioned kind. Run by members, for members (and visitors too!), volunteers work the bar and undertake club and marina maintenance on a roster system.  The well-equipped clubhouse is positioned right on the Fascine. On Friday nights the club is always open, though they will open up on request on other nights during the busy cruising season (subject to member availability to man the bar). The Galley sells reasonably priced meals at $17 for main course, plus $5 for dessert and coffee/tea in August 2008, and according to one member, has 'the best sponge cakes you have ever eaten'.

Members and visitors support the often festive Friday night gatherings on the lawn beneath the coconut palms.  Musical instruments are brought along, creating an impromptu jam session, particularly during the busy cruising season (April to October) when the Fascine is filled with visiting vessels.

Club sailing season is from October to late June.
CYC hosts the vessels and crews entered in the Fremantle to Carnarvon Bluewater Classic held every second year.  Windrush State Titles are hosted by CYC.  Contact the club for more details about entering these events.

Hauling Out

There is a concrete hardstand in the club grounds, suitable for doing maintenance on smaller vessels. Hauling out is possible for some vessels, though with many limitations. Currently the only option is by arrangement with the CYC. A crane is used to lift the vessel onto a jinker which needs to be custom built.  Draft and tides will limit most deep draft vessels.

As of August 2008 a hardstand and slipway suitable for recreational vessels was under construction.

Reasons to Linger

Explore

Hire a car and drive north to Gnarloo and Quobba stations.  Along the way you'll find a memorial plaque marking the tragic loss of HMAS Sydney during WW2 (the wreck location was unknown until early 2008).  If the swell's up stop at the blowholes, but beware of king waves that smash into this coast.  Beachside shacks at Quobba overlook a sheltered bay, which has astounding coral gardens, easily accessible to snorkellers.

Eat

Feast on locally caught blue swimmer crabs at the Crab Shack on the Harbour Rd. Crab eating can be a messy experience: leave your glamour clothes onboard and dress casual.

Shop

Farmers Markets run from May to October. Buy fresh produce direct from the plantation owners, with plenty of variety including an abundance of Asian fruits and vegetables.

Enjoy

Cruise to Red Cliff Bay Bernier Island to anchor beneath wind-sculpted dunes tumbling into a turquoise sea (suitable in S/SW winds). Read up on the rather barbaric history in the Carnarvon Library. During the early 1900's the government of the day established hospitals on Bernier and adjacent Dorrier Is for indigenous patients suffering from infectious diseases.

Join the Locals

Cruisers are welcome, indeed encouraged, to join in club races and "cruises in company".  Racing is a very sociable affair. CYC members are keen kayakers and hold events on the Fascine Channel and Gascoyne River. Visitors are welcome to join in with their dinghies (outboards permitted!)
